Outbound for AWS partners: badges to pipeline
AWS partners earn Competencies the hard way, then almost never convert them into pipeline. Most outbound aimed at AWS buyers reads exactly the same as outbound from non-partners, which means the badge does no work. This guide covers how Advanced and Premier Tier partners should build an outbound motion that turns AWS designations into qualified meetings and co-sell opportunities.
Anchor outbound to a Competency, not a service line
The AWS buyer ecosystem is organised around Competencies (Migration, Data and Analytics, Security, DevOps, Generative AI, SAP on AWS and so on). A message that anchors to a Competency you actually hold reads as credible inside the ecosystem. A message that talks about 'cloud transformation' reads as a non-partner. Lead every sequence with vocabulary specific to a Competency and prove the badge in the second touch.
Identify the buyer for each Competency
- Migration Competency: Head of Cloud Platform, Director of Infrastructure, VP of Engineering.
- Data and Analytics Competency: Head of Data, Director of Analytics Engineering, Chief Data Officer.
- Security Competency: CISO, Head of Cloud Security, Director of GRC.
- Generative AI Competency: VP of AI, Head of ML Platform, Chief Data Officer in AI-forward firms.
- SAP on AWS Competency: SAP programme director, Head of Enterprise Applications.
- DevOps Competency: Head of Platform Engineering, Director of SRE, VP of Engineering.
Use Marketplace and co-sell as proof
Listings on AWS Marketplace, ACE-registered opportunities and AWS Partner Solutions Finder presence are signals AWS buyers actively check. If you have a Marketplace listing, every outbound message and landing page should reference it. The buyer is more likely to engage if procurement can be routed through their existing AWS commitment, and most outbound completely misses this lever.
Coordinate with your Partner Development Manager
Your AWS PDM has visibility into accounts with active field engagement, upcoming EDP renewals, and Competency-aligned opportunities. Most partners check in quarterly. The partners that win check in weekly with a short list of accounts they are about to outbound into and ask whether the field has a position. Coordination converts at three to four times the rate of cold outbound into the same accounts.
Lead with an AWS-specific signal
A working opener references something only AWS buyers care about: a new region launch in their geography, a specific service deprecation affecting their workload, the availability of a Competency-aligned accelerator, or a Well-Architected review trigger. Generic 'we help with cloud cost optimisation' is invisible to a buyer who hears it daily from non-partners.
Realistic targets for an AWS outbound program
A well-run outbound program for an Advanced or Premier Tier partner typically books 5 to 9 qualified meetings per month per dedicated seat, with 25 to 40 percent of those meetings progressing into ACE-registered opportunities. Reply rates of 9 to 13 percent are realistic on Competency-aligned target lists. Materially higher rates usually indicate weak qualification, the same trap covered in our note on measuring outbound ROI. For deals above £250k, also see the multi-threading discipline that protects them through procurement.
